Health Testing Recommendations
for Havanese Breeders

EYE TESTING

The Havanese Club of GB recommends

1) Annual eye testing of all breeding dogs, starting after the age of 12 months, before first breeding. The testing should be performed and certified by an official BVA Eye Panelist.
Where possible, a copy of the report should be submitted to the HCGB Health Officer.

2) Litter eye screening of all litters whilst they are still in ownership of the breeder, by an official BVA Eye Panelist. Where possible, a copy of the report should be submitted to the HCGB Health Officer.

PATELLA TESTING

The Havanese Club of GB recommends that all dogs coming into breeding programs from January 2022 should be tested for luxating patella. Where possible, existing breeding dogs should be also tested.

Patella Testing  should be performed after the age of 12 months, before first breeding.

This is a one off examination by a vet, to check if the patella (knee cap) is firm or luxates out of its groove.

The test should certified as per Putnam Scoring system (a form is available to download below).

Where possible, a copy of the report should be submitted to the HCGB Health Officer.
