Havanese Club of Great Britain

History of the Havanese Club of GB
1992
The Early Years
The Havanese first arrived in the United Kingdom in 1992, imported by a small number of dedicated enthusiasts who had fallen in love with the breed abroad. These pioneering owners saw the potential of the Havanese as” an intelligent, affectionate, and adaptable companion dog ” and were determined to establish it properly in the UK.
1994
Foundation of the Club & RKC Recognition
In 1994, the founding members came together to establish the Havanese Club of Great Britain. The club was created to promote the breed responsibly, support owners and breeders, and work towards full Kennel Club recognition. From the outset, the club set high standards for health, welfare, and ethical breeding.
The Havanese Club of Great Britain received recognition from the Royal Kennel Club and the breed was placed on the Imported Breeds register, marking a significant milestone for Havanese in the UK. This recognition reflected the club's commitment to responsible breed development.
2001
Crufts 2001
A landmark moment came in 2001 when Havanese competed at Crufts for the first time, with the breed holding its first breed classes at the world's greatest dog show. This was a proud achievement for the club and all who had worked to establish the breed.
2015
Challenge Certificate Status
In 2015, the Havanese was granted Challenge Certificate status by the Kennel Club, the highest level of recognition for a pedigree breed at Championship Shows in the UK. This achievement was the culmination of years of work by the club and its members to demonstrate the quality of the Havanese and consistency as a breed.
